Why winter is Kashmir's best-kept secret
Summer crowds vanish, hotel rates soften, and the valley turns into a snow-globe. Dal Lake partially freezes, shikaras break thin ice at dawn, and kahwa tastes like it was invented for exactly this weather.
The houseboat question, answered
Yes, deluxe houseboats run in winter — with bukharis (wood stoves), electric blankets and hot water on schedule. One night on the lake is essential; two is indulgent. Ours include butler service and a dawn shikara through the floating gardens.
Gulmarg in snow season
The Gondola runs weather-permitting to Phase 2 (Apharwat, ~13,000 ft) — among the world's highest cable cars. Even non-skiers should go up for the view. Snow boots, sledges and ski lessons are rentable on the spot; we pre-book gondola slots so you skip the queue.
What to pack (the honest list)
Layer, don't bulk: thermal base, fleece mid, waterproof shell. Good gloves matter more than a heavy jacket. Sunglasses are non-negotiable — snow glare is real. Keep shoes waterproof; leather soles on ice are a slapstick genre.
